| Assembly guide: Titanium frames & parts |
Installed correctly Spin titanium frames & parts will last for many thousands of trouble-free miles of cycling. But unlike other metals you may be more familiar with, extra care must be taken when installing titanium parts to avoid a potentially damaging reaction with any other metals or materials used in your bicycle. Read on for more information, or download our care information here.
If you are not experienced in building or maintaining your bike or if you have any doubts about your ability, we recommend asking your local expert bike shop or nearest authorised Spin dealer to help. |

Introducing the SAS |
Assembly & installation of titanium frames & parts
With titanium it's really important to use plenty of anti-seize compound wherever and everywhere Ti comes into contact with any other metal, including more Ti. This is to prevent gauling, which is an electro-chemical reaction that effectively welds Ti & other metals together resulting in totally seized parts that cannot be separated without causing serious damage.
There are a number of good anti-seize compounds on the market and the most common of these are copper based. These work but tend to leave copper coloured residues in all gaps and boundary surfaces that can be really hard to remove.
We use Shimano Anti-Seize compound which is a non-copper formulation. It’s the best anti-seize compound we've come across, and so we recommend it to all of our customers, for the following reasons:
- It’s a very powerful anti-seize
- It's clean to use and any excess can be easily wiped away
- It's water proof
- It's also a great lubricant
When assembling titanium parts be sure to use plenty of anti-seize compound at all points of contact between titanium and any other metal including titanium, steel and aluminium alloys.
These might include, but aren’t limited to:
- Headset cups, Ti head spacers and stem caps
- Seat posts & bolts
- Seat clamps & bolts
- Water bottle boss bolts
- Bottom bracket cups
- Brake calliper fixing bolts

Spin Head Candy and Spin Hendrix titanium headsets
If we’ve pre-installed a Spin Head Candy or Hendrix titanium headset into one of our frames for you, then we’ve already packed out the bearing cups and cases with Shimano Anti-Seize so that they’re ready to accept your fork, seal with the upper bearing race and are ready for your stem and stem cap.
If you’ve bought one of our titanium headsets to install in a frame yourself, please be sure to use plenty of anti-seize compound between the bearing cups and your frame, and also inside the cups, between the cup walls and the bearing cases.
We specify a high quality steel encased sealed bearing unit which will give you many miles of trouble free riding. But it’s important to ensure there is sufficient anti-seize in between the cups and the bearings to prevent steel-to-titanium gauling and/or corrosion.
Shimano Anti-Seize is also really useful to finally pack out the bearing cups before final assembly of your fork and top race, as its water proof qualities will help to keep out rain and moisture.
We recommend inspecting, cleaning and replacing your anti-seize on a regular basis, especially during and after extensive riding in winter months. |

Assembly & installation of carbon fibre parts
When installing carbon fibre parts such as a fork steerer tube into our titanium stems, or a carbon seat post into one of our titanium frames, we use and recommend the use of a fibre grip compound.
This allows good clamping grip on hollow carbon fibre parts without excessive torque requirements, and can also help to eliminate creaking sounds that can be common when clamping Ti to carbon.
We tend to use Finish Line Fibre Grip but there are no doubt many other compounds equally as good. These are sometimes marketed as “liquid torque” compounds, and are readily available from all good bike shops.

Exceeding these torque settings may invalidate your warranty. If in doubt get your local professional bike shop to help. |

| The great thing about Ti compared to all other bike material is it needs hardly any ongoing care. Carbon needs some love. |
You bought a Ti bike to avoid having to worry about it. And the good news is you were right. Compared to all other materials from which to make frames and parts, Ti is the most robust and doesn't demand your constant attention. On the other hand, your carbon parts will last you longer if you take good care of them.
If you want to make your Ti really pop and dazzle the competition, or just want to bring it back to factory finish, we can help. At Spin we have the technology and the know how, and we're delighted to be able to share it with you. Check out the Workshop section of our store for some great specialist products for removing scratches and protecting carbon to mirror polishing Ti. |

Care for Spin Ti frames & Ti Monolithic parts
The great thing about Ti is it hardly needs any care. It doesn’t rust, and there’s no paint to scratch. All you need to do is clean it once in a while using some water and a brush or wash mitt, and ensure all areas that contact with other metals has sufficient anti-seize in between. Checking these Ti-metal assemblies at your regular bike service is always a good idea, re-applying liberal SAS if necessary.
Our frames and most of our major parts such as stems and seat posts are finished using our Spindustrial polish technique which is achieved by hand brushing the tubes with an abrasive scouring pad such as Scotchbrite from 3M. You can see what this looks like on the frame on the left.
If you scratch this finish, or it loses its bright lustre after a few years of hard riding, a quick rub with Scotchbrite will bring it back to factory finish.
When polishing tubular parts always rub down around the circumference of the tube and not along its length. This will preserve and reinforce its original factory finish.
Mirror polished & Hendrixed parts
Parts such as our headsets have a fine mirror polished finish which requires more care. A specialist polish such as T1 titanium polish is a
Titanium Hendrix parts with Purple Haze finishes require the most care as any contact with abrasives will lighten or even completely remove the hand anodised finish. Avoid using any cleaners or polishes containing abrasives. |

Finish
|
Recommended |
| Spindustrial Polish |
Light brushing with an abrasive cloth such as ScotchBrite
Avoid excessive pressure, and always brush around, not
along individual tubes to maintain or brighten the finish. |
| King Mirror Polish |
Do NOT use an abrasive such as ScotchBrite.
Do use a soft microfibre polishing cloth and GTECHNIQ P1, M1
or T1 titanium polish formulation. |
| Hendrix & Purple Haze finishes |
Do NOT use an abrasive such as ScotchBrite or any metal polish.
Do use a soft clean microfibre polishing cloth and only if
necessary a water/light detergent mix.
Buff any detergent
residues off to avoid light interference patterns and
visual degradation of the finish. |
| Carbon parts |
Do NOT use abrasive products.
Do use a soft microfibre polishing cloth and GTECHNIQ P1 to remove cosmetic surface scratches
Use GTECHNIQ C2 to coat and protect all carbon parts (except braking surfaces on carbon wheel rims). |
